Private and public health insurance

The German health insurance system consists of both public (GKV) and private health insurance (PKV). Since everyone in Germany is basically required to have general health insurance, this means that all citizens are covered by either public or private health insurance. Private health insurance is subject to special regulations that are tied to a fixed minimum income. In contrast, anyone can take out public health insurance.

Things to note when entering Germany from abroad

If you wish to enter Germany as a third-country national, you must present proof of health insurance coverage before applying for your entry visa.
