Permanent residency permit


Permanent residency permitIf the deadline for your residency permit soon expires, but you would like to stay in Germany permanently, you have the possibility to apply for a permanent residency permit.
This is unlimited and enables you to live and work in Germany with your family without restrictions.



Requirements

You must meet the following requirements in order to obtain a permanent residency permit:

  • possession of a residency permit for 4 years
  • proof of secure financial livelihood without the assistance of public financial support
  • payment of contributions into the federal social security system for more than 48 months
  • proof of German language skills (minimum CEF level B1 required)
  • proof of employment in your field
  • proof of sufficient living space for you and your family

Application procedure

The immigration office of the city in which you live is responsible for issuing the permanent residency permit. You will find any necessary documents on the website of the respective office. As a rule, however, the documents are as follows:

  • proof of fulfillment of passport and visa requirements
  • proof of sufficient living space for you and your family
  • proof of secure, financial livelihood without the assistance of public financial support
  • proof that there is no interest in deporting you
  • proof that you do not endanger the interests of the Federal Republic of Germany
  • proof of no criminal record
  • proof that you have held a residency permit for more than four years
  • proof of paid social security contributions
  • proof of employment in your field
  • proof of German language skills (minimum CEF level B1 required)

Please note that the processing time can take between four and eight weeks.
