Work and residency permit for skilled professionalsIf you have received a concrete job offer from an employer in Germany and would like to accept it, you need to apply for a work and residency permit for skilled professionals. This is issued for a maximum of four years. If your employment contract is limited to a shorter time period, the time frame is adjusted to this period. After the four years have expired, you have the possibility, under certain conditions, to apply for a residency permit and, thus, ultimately obtain an unlimited residency permit. You must meet the following requirements in order to obtain a work and residency permit for skilled professionals:

  • proof of completed vocational training or academic studies program
  • certification of your foreign professional qualifications
  • proof of a job offer in your field from an employer in Germany
  • for individuals over 45 years of age: proof of gross annual salary of a minimum of €45,540 or proof of adequate retirement savings

Application procedureApplication procedure

The immigration office of the city in which you live is responsible for issuing the work and residency permit for skilled professionals. You can find any necessary documents on the website of the respective office. As a rule, however, the documents are as follows:

  • completely filled out application form
  • proof of registration according to your place of residency
  • valid passport
  • proof of stable, financial livelihood for the duration of your stay
  • proof of health insurance coverage
  • biometric passport photo
  • proof of paid processing fee

Please note that the processing time may take approx. four to eight weeks.
