Residency permit for job seekers

Residency permit for job seekersIf you would like to work in Germany but cannot find any suitable job offers from abroad, you, as a qualified skilled professional, have the opportunity to search for a job directly in Germany with the residency permit for job seekers. This permit is issued for a maximum of six months.
Please note that you may not take up gainful employment during this time. Once you have found a job, you must then apply for a residency permit for skilled professionals, and, as a third-country national, you must first apply for a visa before entering Germany.

Requirements

You must meet the following requirements in order to obtain a residency permit for job search purposes:

  • proof of completed vocational training or academic studies program
  • certification of your foreign professional qualifications
  • proof of your German language skills (minimum CEF level B1 required)
  • proof of secure financial livelihood for the duration of your stay (e.g. through a blocked account)

Application procedure

The immigration office of the city in which you live is responsible for issuing the residency permit for job seekers. You will find any necessary documents on the website of the respective office. As a rule, however, the documents are as follows:

  • completely filled out application form
  • proof of registration according to your place of residency
  • valid passport
  • proof of stable, financial livelihood for the duration of your stay
  • proof of health insurance coverage
  • biometric passport photo
  • proof of paid processing fee

Please note that the processing time can take between four and eight weeks.
